FFA Students Compete in Public Speaking Contest both

Congratulations to Elida FFA members John Foust and Silvia Morales for their gold ratings in the FFA Creed Public Speaking Contest. Silvia placed 3rd and John placed 2nd in the sub-district contest. John will advance to the District Contest on February 20th. Great job, John & Silvia!

Student Recites Pledge over Morning Announcements

We are proud of  2nd grade student Isaac Agozzino for leading the school in the Pledge of Allegiance on Wednesday! Isaac wanted to dress as a President and lead the Pledge that morning. Mr. Clark was willing to relinquish duty for the day! Great job, Isaac!

Spring Musical "Newsies" Opens March 14th new

Elida Theater is thrilled to present the Disney Broadway musical "Newsies" next month. Opening Night is Thurs., March 14th at 7:30 pm. Showtimes continue on Friday, March 15th & Saturday, March 16th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 17th at 4:00 pm. Tickets on sale in the HS Activities office beginning Thurs., Feb. 14th. $12 Premiere Seating, $10 Adults, $6 Students. ACT Test Prep Workshop tahe

For current Elida juniors who will be taking the ACT test at EHS on March 12th: An ACT Prep Course will be held at the High School on Feb. 16th (10-4:00) and 17th (1-4:00). The course is instructed by "take ACTion" at a cost of $125. Go to takeactiontestprep.com for more information and to register or see your counselor for an informational sheet. Seating is limited and the class will close once seats are filled.

Middle School Spelling Bee spell

The middle school Spelling Bee was held on Wed., Jan. 23rd and congratulations to Mya Risner (8th gr.) champion (on the right) and Melody Gallaspie (6th gr)runner up. Mya will now will move on to represent Elida Middle School at the county bee on Feb. 23rd at the OSU Lima branch.

2019-20 Kindergarten Registration

If your child will be 5 years old on or before August 1, 2019 they can attend kindergarten at Elida Elementary. Register in the office Mon.-Fri. 8:00-4:00 pm. Guiding Good Choices Program

The Partnership for Violence Free Families (PVFF) is offering a parenting class called "Guiding Good Choices." This program encourages, reinforces and teaches skills to parents that can help children make healthy choices. This program is for caregivers of children ages 9-14 and there is a $50 incentive for completion of the program. More details in this flyer. Intro to Piano Theory Class exams piano

Exam time in the high school and this morning the Intro to Piano/Theory class performed their exam pieces. While 60 students signed up for this new class, 17 students are enrolled. Social Media: Addiction & Detox clip

Social media is a great tool for communication. However, a recent study shows that too much use is linked to depression. The average person spends two-hours every day on social media and TEENS are spending up to NINE HOURS each day on social platforms.
A recent study by the University of Pennsylvania measured the effects of social media use on mental health, and the impact on feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression and self-esteem. 

Annual Pass, Dribble & Shoot Contest

The Shawnee Optimist Club is sponsoring their annual Pass, Dribble, and Shoot Contest on Sunday, January 20th, at 1:30 PM.  The event is in the Shawnee High School Lappin Gymnasium, doors open at 12:45 with easy registration for boys and girls ages 8 to 13. Shawnee Boys and Girls Basketball teams will be assisting with the event.  This contest is the only one of it’s kind in a tri-county area, and Elida student athletes are welcome to participate and compete. Each participant receives a free t-shirt!

Middle School Staff can DANCE!

Staff in the Middle School gave a special farewell to the students today before heading off for Christmas Break. Who knew they had these talents? The students LOVED it as you can tell! They performed the dance four times for each of the lunch periods. This clip features many of our fifth grade teachers, staff, Social Worker Charissa Langstaff, and Principal Drury on the bells.  

 

Free Tennis Program for Middle School students

Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center will be hosting a free tennis program for middle school students age 12-14, every Sunday, January 13-March 3. Stop by the middle school office for more information. 

Elementary Receives Momentum Award

The State Board of Education of Ohio has recognized 70 districts and 226 school buildings with the Momentum Award for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year. Schools must earn straight A’s on all Value-Added measures on the report card. The school or district must have at least two Value-Added subgroups of students, which includes gifted, lowest 20 percent in achievement and students with disabilities. CONGRATULATIONS to the Elementary Teachers, Staff & Students for this great achievement!

Dime Wars in the Elementary

Grades K-4 at Elida Elementary “battled” over which grade level could raise the most money through Dime Wars.  The totals are in and the entire student population raised almost $1,200 to be donated to Elida families in need for Christmas and a local organization that blesses Elida Elementary year after year.  We are so proud of our student’s heart and willingness to give for the sake of others. The BULLDOG PRIDE is STRONG at ELIDA ELEMENTARY!

 

Spring for the STARS Vendor Craft Fair

The annual Spring for the STARS Vendor and Craft Fair will be held on Sat., March 9th from 10:00-4:00pm in the high school gyms. This event helps to support our elementary STARS program. There are many vendors who participate with great items at great prices, plus giveaways, prizes and more. 

Middle School Receives Award from O.D.E. doug

Middle School Principal Doug Drury and Asst. Principal Nick Morris attended The Ohio PBIS Showcase in Columbus on Nov. 29th& 30th to accept a Silver Recognition Award for 2018! The award is in recognition of the work that the staff and teachers have done in promoting PBIS. (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.) They've implemented plans to encourage and support positive behavior in the school for five years and received a bronze award in 2016.

BUILDING SECURITY UPDATES

 

As we continually look to see how we can make our school district a safer place for students to learn, we wanted to update you on a new initiative that will be in full gear beginning October 15th.

SchoolGate Guardian is a new visitor management system that will be used in our three school buildings. The use of a visitor management system aligns with the “Best Practices” for school security, and SchoolGate Guardian is currently in use in more than 1,000 school districts throughout the country.

This new visitor management system will require visitors to have their driver’s license or state ID scanned. Once the visitor’s ID is checked against the National Sex Offender database and a district database, visitors will a receive a visitor’s badge in order to enter the building from the school lobby. The system only scans the visitor’s name, date of birth, and photo for comparison purposes. The system does not save any other information. If the background check raises any red flags about the visitor, a school administrator will take the necessary steps to ensure the appropriateness of each visit. 

 

Safety Training fire

As part of our staff professional development sessions on Monday, our food service department received safety training from American Township Fire Department. They were given hands on training on using a fire extinguisher. Another way that Elida Schools makes staff and student Safety a Number One Priority! Hear the story from Your Hometown Stations Here. Annual Golf Scramble Postponed

Due to bad weather forecasted for the weekend with flooding conditions expected, we are postponing the Foundation Golf Scramble that was scheduled for this Sun., Sept. 9th until next Sunday, September16th. Same time and place.  

Emerging Artists Exhibit in Columbus

We are proud to announce that three Elida High School students have artwork accepted into the annual Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) “Emerging Artist” Exhibition. Sophomores Kylie Swallow and Sara Phipps and Junior Aubrey Vincent have artwork that will be part of this annual exhibit. The exhibit is at the State Teacher’s Retirement Systems (STRS) building, 275 East Broad Street, in Columbus from September 10th through October 20th. CONGRATULATIONS to these talented Elida student artists and to High School Art teacher Erin Johnson.

Senior Receives $4,000 Scholarship from Kiwanis Club cap

Congratulations to Senior McKayla Gilbert who was awarded a $4,000 scholarship by the Kiwanis Club of Lima! McKayla will study music at Heidelberg University. The check was presented by Music Chair Crystal Miller during the Kiwanis Club of Lima’s annual music awards luncheon at the  Lima Masonic Center.

Three Elida Graduates will be recognized and inducted into the Elida Athletic Hall of Fame this Sat., Jan. 20th. 1962 graduate Mr. Del Shinn, 1976 graduate Mr. Jeff Brown and 1995 graduate Ms. Mianda Watts will be honored. Tickets are available until Wednesday for $20. High School Teacher Receives Recognition as District 1 Teacher of the Year

We are starting this school year with very special recognition for our high school Computer Science Teacher, Mr. Mark Suter. Mark has been named the District 1 Teacher of the Year by the Ohio State Board of Education. (District 1 encompasses 22 counties in Northwest Ohio.) He received a commendation from the State of Ohio. We also welcomed Representative Bob Cupp who attended our staff meeting today to personally congratulate Mark on this accomplishment. Mark is now one of just five teachers to be considered for Ohio's Teacher of the Year. We are proud to have Mark Suter on our staff, leading and teaching our students. He helps to make Elida Schools great...Educating for Tomorrow!

High School Choir Fall Concert

The Elida High School Women’s and Men’s Chorus and Chamber Choir will perform their Fall Concert on Monday, October 15th at 7:30 pm in the Elida High School Auditorium. This is a FREE concert and open to the public.

COSI to present: "Exploring Ecology" cosi

Elida 5th & 6th grade students will have an opportunity to explore the outdoors without leaving school when COSI (Center of Science and Industry) brings its traveling science program “Exploring Ecology” to Elida Middle School on Friday, Oct. 19, from 8:30-1:30 pm. This innovative, interactive program brings the science of prairies, forests, rivers, and wetlands to the school. Students will investigate animal adaptations, life cycles, and learn how parts of an ecosystem are connected.We're looking forward to this fun program of learning! 

1.14.2018 Alumnus to Play in Collegiate Bowl

Elida graduate and Ohio University Linebacker Quentin Poling has been chosen to play in the 2018 Collegiate Bowl on January 20 in Rose Bowl Stadium.The Collegiate Bowl gives prospective players the best opportunity to showcase their talents to potential employers and fans. Nearly 200 scouts, player personnel staff, general managers and head coaches from all 32 NFL teams are expected be in attendance. More in this article from the Ohio University website. Marching Band Concert

Join the Elida High School Marching Band for their end of the season FREE concert Monday, October 29th  @ 7:00 in the Elida High School Auditorium. This concert will feature all the great music from throughout the season. You’ll get to listen to and enjoy the pregame music, the exciting halftime shows including music from “Script Elida,” plus a few more favorites.

The Wellness Committee will be scheduling a meeting in early April. The Winter Informal, previously known as Sadies, will take place this Friday, Jan. 26 after the boys' basketball game (830-11pm) in the Commons. The dance is open to all Elida High School students. Tickets are $5.....

Consolidated Continuous Improvement Plan

The Elida Local School District receives funds through the Ohio Department of Education via the Consolidated Continuous Improvement Plan (CCIP). Monies received through IDEA-B are used to provide Special Education Services for students with identified disabilities. Title I funds are used to provide reading and early literacy interventions to qualified students. Title IIA funds are used for targeted professional development, which must align with the goals outlined in the CCIP.Public input regarding the use of these funds for the upcoming school year is welcome. Public input can be given Wednesday morning, June 21st, from 8:00am-8:30am in the central office located at 4380 Sunnydale Ave., Elida , Ohio 45807.

2.1.18 Reflector Yearbook

The 2018 edition of the Reflector Yearbook is on sale in Mrs. Glenn's room for $75.00 through the end of April. Checks should be made to Elida High School with "Reflector" in the memo. Down-payments of $25 will reserve a book, although all books must be paid in full by May 23rd.  Please bring orders in an envelope marked with the student's name and the name of their Bulldog teacher.

Each year, we accept nominations of individuals to be recognized as the Distinguished Alumni of the Year. Any alumnus of Elida or Gomer High School. Nominations due by December 15th. NOMINATION FORM

DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!

   Congratulations to the District Champions, the Elida Boys Basketball Team. On to Regional Semi-Final! Elida will play at The University of Toledo at Savage Arena this  Thursday, March 16th at 8:00 pm. Tickets are on sale now in the Athletic Office. They will be on sale Monday-Wednesday from 7:30 am-4:00 pm and on Wednesday night from 6-7:30 pm. On Thursday, tickets will be sold from 7:30 am-1:00 pm.  Thursday night will not be a split session.  All pre-sale tickets are $7 and all tickets at the door are $8.
