An Open Letter to Parents and Community Residents Regarding
School Safety in Elida Local Schools

Providing our children with a safe place to learn is a top priority. We would like to share with you the well-planned safety and security measures we have in place.

* Good Relationships with Local Safety Authorities

Elida Local Schools maintain a solid, cooperative partnership with local police and fire departments.  These safety forces meet regularly with school officials in a proactive environment to insure the safety and security of Elida Local students and staff. The safety forces also take part in school staff training.  People from the local police and fire departments often spend time in the District interfacing with students and staff.

* Safety Committee (Crisis Response Team)

The Elida Local safety committee meets regularly to discuss safety and security issues throughout the district. Members of this group suggest positive changes and serve as leaders in school safety awareness.

* Safety Drills

In an effort to make sure our students and staff are well prepared in case of an emergency, every school building holds regularly scheduled safety drills, including tornado drills, fire drills, evacuation drills and shelter-in-place drills. Building staff evaluates the effectiveness of each drill and determines if any adjustments need to be made.  In addition, local safety forces often observe these safety drills.

* Stay Safe - Speak Up

Everyone is strongly encouraged to speak up if they know of anyone threatening violence or bullying. Tell any school official, especially a teacher or principal, or call a local authority (911).  To leave a confidential and anonymous phone message call 844-SaferOH.

* Technology

Security cameras are strategically placed in several locations throughout the district. These cameras display and record video that can be viewed by district administrators.  School officials and local police can also use these videos when investigating any incidents.  Telephones are located in all classrooms in the middle and high schools.

* Emergency/Crisis Plans

Elida Local Schools Emergency/Crisis plans that were submitted to the state Attorney General’s office are well thought out.  Every location on campus is detailed in a way that is thorough and easy for safety forces and school officials to understand. Local police and fire officials have reviewed the district crisis plans and shared their input as well.

* Student Programs

It is important for people to feel connected and a part of their community. We believe in providing students with the opportunity to be heard if they are struggling with a situation.

Groups such as Student Council, Elida Community Service Organization (Good Vibes), Junior Statesmen of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Athletic Leadership Council as well as our extra-curricular opportunities allow for students to make connections with others and highlight the importance of working together and being kind to one another.

* Infrastructure Improvements

We are constantly considering changes and additions to our buildings and grounds to provide safer surroundings for our students and staff.  While cost is always a challenge in public schools, rest assured we will do all we can to make these positive changes happen.

In addition, we have placed a safety kit in every classroom for use during any natural or man-made emergency.

* Alert Now

An automated voice and text system to announce special school events.   This provides immediate communication to students and parents that have signed up with our technology department to receive these messages.

* Safe Schools Training

On-line training is available, and certain areas are required, of all district staff.  A wide variety of topics are covered including Emergency Management, Security, personal and building safety.

* Training

Since spring 2010 Elida Schools have followed the A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) program for school safety. We believe it is the most solid, up-to-date and progressive school safety program available.  We train all students and staff with age-appropriate, customized training by local A.L.I.C.E. certified trainers.

* Community & School Support

Several local groups and organizations are at the ready should the staff and students of  Elida Schools need help. Those that may be called upon include Critical Incident Management Team (CISM), school guidance counselors, local clergy, American Township Fire and Police Departments, Village of Elida Police Department, Allen County Sheriff’s Department and others.
