Mr. Delbert P. Shinn is a 1962 graduate of Elida High School and he graduated from Ohio Northern with a degree in Education, because he was inspired by his teachers at Elida. "The real people who helped mold my life were the teachers and coaches at Elida." Del was a good student, a member of The National Honor Society, and a great athlete on the football field and 2nd leading scorer on the basketball team, and a successful track athlete, as well. He was inducted into the Elida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.
Del worked in the Napoleon School District for 31 years as a teacher, an assistant Principal and as an Interim Principal at Patrick Henry. Because of his philosophy of "paying it forward" and as an enthusiastic supporter of young people, he established the Shinn Family Memorial Scholarship 18 years ago as a tribute to his family members: Kenneth, Bernice, Dennis & Del. The scholarship helps graduating Elida Seniors with college expenses. In addition to the scholarship, Del funded the reconstruction of the home press box at Kraft Stadium, (the Delbert P. "Del" Shinn Press Box) and the vistor's press box, and co-funded along with the estate of Arthur T. Schreiber, the construction of the football locker-room and co-ed weight room.
Del explains that he had a great experience at Elida so he asked himself, "What kind of social imprint am I leaving?" That lead him to be the first person to designate the Elida Educational Foundation in his will. Del also has worked in the district as a driving instructor for the past 20 years! We can't thank him enough for his support of our students!
