Alumni Spotlight: Class of 2018 Kate Foster

Kate Foster is a graduate of the Elida Class of 2018 and just graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a dual major in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Global Ministries. She recently spent several weeks working here in the district student teaching, finishing her TESOL Practicum, assisting students with language barriers. We have a great number of students enrolled in the district with whom English is not their primary language, students from the Philippines, Uzbekistan, China, and Central South America. She assisted students in small groups and observed in the middle and high school, as well. Now, her plans have her leaving for destinations around the globe.

Kate is traveling abroad and her first stop is in Perth, Australia where she will be working with “Global Partners” working with the children in their youth ministry program. After several weeks in Australia, she leaves for Cambodia where she will attend the “South Pacific Missionary Conference.”

After a brief return to Elida, Kate will leave again later this summer for a long stay in Bosnia, where she will work for “Varna English Acquisition Program.” (VEAP) Kate will be helping Chinese students preparing for high school who are living in Bosnia. Kate says she’s excited for the opportunity and coincidentally will have a fellow Elida classmate, Vanessa Sarwar, there along with her.

Her plans after Bosnia are wide open with numerous possibilities. “The work in Bosnia will last almost one year, and after that I may continue to teach abroad and eventually back to the U.S., possibly pursue a graduate degree, or help adult immigrants and refugees with legal help.” Regardless of what she decides, it looks like Kate has a very bright future.
